Mary G. Simmer

Mary G. Simmer, 77, passed away November 19, 2013 in Harlingen, Texas.
She was born March 4, 1936 in Mercedes, Texas to Samuel and Amelia Lopez Villarreal. Mary attended Bellevue College in Omaha, Nebraska where she received an Associate Degree and she also held a Cosmetology License. Mary served her country with the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1958 as a clerk typist at the Hickam AFB in Hawaii.  She was member of the Base drill team and played softball and basketball. Mary married Jerry Lee Simmer in 1958. She had various jobs wherever she was stationed. Then Mary went to work for the Social Security Administration and was employed there until her retirement. She was member of the American Legion of La Feria and the Elks Lodge. Mary enjoyed spending time with her grandkids, traveling with friends, spending time at the American Legion.
She is survived by her children, Carol (Lindell) Cannon of Kingsville, TX; Jerry Simmer, Jr.  of South Padre Island, TX; grandchildren, Tyler (Lahra) Cannon of Buda, TX and Baylie Cannon of Kingsville, TX; brothers and sisters, Rudy Villareal of Alvin, Texas, Emma De La Fuente of Weslaco, TX, Albert “Beto” Hernandez of Weslaco, TX, Maria Leal of Austin, Texas and Joe Hernandez of Weslaco, TX; numerous nieces and nephews; and her dear friend, Joe Lewis.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jerry Lee Simmer; brother Sam Villareal and sister, Lilly Edmunds.
A memorial service will be held Monday, November 25, 2013, 6 p.m., at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home with Wade Nollkamper officiating.  Burial will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, TX.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or the Humane Society of Harlingen, Texas.
