Mary Frances Stokes Nelson, 94, of Harlingen, TX went to be with the Lord on June 6, 2017. “I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful” (II Tim 4:7).
Born in Alvin, TX then moved to the Valley in 1947. Mary retired from Mercedes High School as the Librarian (1947 -1983). In retirement she enjoyed working in the HOST reading program and helping in the First Baptist Church Library for many years.
Mary is survived by her nephews Albert Dean (Margi) of Copperas Cove TX and Russell Dean (Nancy) of Harlingen TX; step children James R. Nelson (Johnee) and Joyce C. Smith (Dean) of Colorado. Also by cousins Bill Douglas, Linda Davenport and Diane Pettis .
She was preceded in death by parents, husbands Jim Stokes and Jim Nelson, daughter Julia (Julie) Stokes, and brother Chester P. Dean.
Visitation will be held Thursday evening June 8th 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
Funeral Services will be held Friday June 9th at 2:00 PM at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home. Interment will be Saturday June 10th 2:00 PM at Mission Park Cemetery 1700 E. Military Dr. San Antonio, TX.
In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to First Baptist Church Library of Harlingen TX or charity of your choice.
