Mary Louise “Mazie” Irby passed away peacefully in her sleep Tuesday, September 9 at the age of 87. Mazie was born on May 14, 1921 in Mercedes, Texas and was the daughter of Lot and Louise Johnston.
A graduate of Weslaco High School class of 1939, Mazie went to marry Edward Banks Irby, of Mercedes in 1942.
Mazie has over 60 years of service with Beta Sigma Phi. She was a long-time member of Harlingen’s St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.
Mazie enjoyed sewing and gardening. She and Edward traveled extensively in a motorhome and often took along grandchildren. She also enjoyed being with her 6 great-grandchildren.
Mazie is survived by her husband of nearly 66 years, Edward Banks Irby, longtime owner of Lewis Electric Motors. She is also survived by her daughter Mary Margaret “Peggi” Thomas (Paul) of Harlingen, grandsons Brian Thomas (Melissa) of Kingsville and Steve Thomas (Carly) of Harlingen, granddaughter Linnsey Thomas O’Connor (Jason) of Spring. Also survived are 6 beloved great-grandchildren, Dylan, Caleb, Sadey, Macey and Wyatt Thomas and Pike Burns Thomas.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Mazie’s at-home caregiver, Juan Mireles.
Visitation hours will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church in Harlingen on Thursday, September 11, 2008 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Restlawn Cemetery in La Feria.
Pallbearers will include Paul Thomas, Brian Thomas, Steven Thomas, Jason O’Connor, Mike McLelland and Keith Burns. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dylan Thomas and Caleb Thomas.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Rio Grande Children’s Home 3780 N. Bentsen Palm Drive, Mission, Texas 78574 or a charity of one’s choice.
