Mary Ellen Elliott

December 9, 1928 — May 23, 2011

La Feria, TX:
Mary Ellen Lucas Elliott entered into eternal rest May 23, 2011.  Mom was diagnosed with lung cancer at the first of the year and fought the battle with grace and dignity.
Mom graduated from La Feria High School, attended Baylor University and graduated from Texas A & I Kingsville. Originally a stay at home Mom, she was lured into teaching, where she spent the next 25 years in the elementary classrooms of La Feria ISD.  Upon retiring, Mom was then snagged by her son (Tim) to work for the next 22 years at Elliott’s Custom Golf as his bookkeeper and sounding board.  Mom always spoke her mind in those 22 years, some I did not want to hear, I always listened, she was usually right.
Mom loved to talk! Never met a stranger. I had to come up with a signal at the shop to let her know she had talked just enough and she could now let the customer out the door.  She loved going to the gym to work out, I always told her she had the strongest jaws around. Those monthly gatherings of the Wednesday lunch group. She looked forward to the monthly event. I always knew who was going and who could not make it. She loved you guys more than you will ever know.
Heidi has lived just down the road from Mom, and she had a habit of hitting their house just about dinner time. I think she really liked Gary’s cookin.  I know he cooks a mean turkey, but frying fish and grillin steaks were a couple of his specialties and Heidi always let Mom know when Gary was cookin. There was no doubt my Mom loved a good meal, always relished being the first of her friends to know the skinny on the new restaurants in town.
As a life time animal lover, Mom never met an animal she did not like or take in.  I think the stray dogs in La Feria must have had a code or something; they seemed to know to show up at Mom’s house. They would always be taken in.  She always had a cat and a couple of dogs runnin around the house. She was very protective of her animals.  I heard the best compliment at Altas Palmas Animal Clinic from one of the vets “when I die I want to come back as one of Mary’s animals”. That says a lot about a person!
Family time, that was always fun.  Mom loved watching the grandkids and then the great grandkids grow.  She loved the gatherings; they were originally at Heidi and Gary’s home and more recently at Stephanie and Billie D’s home. That was Mom’s favorite times, good family, good food, and a lot to talk about.
Our family never has been one of those TV families; you know the ones that are always hugging and kissing all the time. We were always there for each other. Especially Mom, she would drop whatever she was doing if we needed her, and we did need her many times. She was always there always. She was the best Mom, I could ever imagine. We all will miss her.
Mom was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Elliott; brother-in-law: Jacque Elliott; her mom and dad, Frank and Mabel Lucas.
She is survived by her two children, Tim (Bettina) Elliott and Heidi (Gary) Warner; grandchildren, Stephanie (Billie D) Simpson and Lloyd (Cyndi) Warner; great grandchildren, Clayton D and Ryan Mack Simpson.  She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Charlynn Elliott; niece and nephew, Joel Elliott and Beth Ann (Rusty) Elliott Truax and their families.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 26, 2011 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with family receiving friends from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
