Mary Jane Avinger, age 90, departed this life peacefully to be with our Lord on March 30, 2017 in Harlingen.
She was born on May 8, 1926 to Harold and Lena Jones of Edinburg where she lived until she married Jesse Lee Avinger and moved to Harlingen in 1955. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she loved teaching Sunday School and singing in the choir. She was also very active in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and held numerous offices and was the chairman of the annual Christmas Home Tour. Mary Jane was famous of her tacos and enchiladas and this was always requested when family would visit and she was happy to comply with their wishes.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years and her younger brother, Kenton Jones.
She is survived by daughters, Kathy (Kent) Groth of Sugar Land and LeNann (Mike) Yates of Harlingen, and her older brother Joe Mac Jones of Buda, Texas.
Mary Jane resided at Golden Palms for 12 years and she participated in many of their activities and it was truly her home. We especially want to thank Mike and JoAnn McCulley for welcoming Mary Jane into their home and the loving care that they provided in the final days.
A memorial service will be held in the Texas Room at Golden Palms on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mary Jane’s name may do so to the Ronald McDonald House or charity of your choice.
