Mary Frances Black Anderson, 94, went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on June 22, 2019. She passed away at the Spear Home in Harlingen, Texas with her children at her side.
Mary was born May 31, 1925 to Frank C. Black and Carrie May Plunkett Black in Murchison, Texas. She and her twin brother, the youngest of nine children, grew up in north central Texas.
She graduated from Powell High School in 1942, then attended Midland Radio and Television School in Kansas City, Missouri where she learned to assemble and repair radios. Mary worked at Goodfellow Field in San Angelo, Texas through the end of WWII where her job was to make sure the radios worked properly in airplanes before takeoff. After the war ended she moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, and worked as a reservationist for Northwest Airlines. There she met and married Donald W. Anderson on Feb. 7, 1948. They made their permanent home in Harlingen, Texas in 1952, where they raised a son and daughter.
Mary worked in the records department at Flynn Investment Company, Flynn Insurance Agency, and Rio Grande Building and Loan, for more than 30 years. After retiring, she volunteered at Valley Baptist Hospital for over 20 years, until she was 89.
Mary was a long-time member of Calvary Baptist Church and served on the school board of Calvary Christian School. She was an accomplished seamstress, and enjoyed crafting and quilting. She also enjoyed traveling and during her lifetime had the pleasure of visiting many different places including England, Victoria British Columbia Canada, Monterrey Mexico, and many parts of the U.S.A including Alaska.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Don, and her 8 siblings: Myrtle Edwards, Florence Peabody, Thelma Graham, Carrie Powell, James Robert Black, Doris Hansen, Katie Nowlin, and Cary F. Black.
She is survived by her son Terry Anderson, daughter Mary (Susie) Schaudies and husband Steve, granddaughter Bethany Schaudies, and numerous nieces and nephews.
We (the family), want to express our sincerest thanks to the Kindred Hospice staff: Louise and Maria, especially, and to the Spear Home staff: Lisa, Elvia, Olga, Bianca, Tilley, and Dana, for the kind, loving care given to Mary during her final days. We are so very grateful for your compassion and kindheartedness. God bless you all.
A memorial service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church in Harlingen on Saturday, August 3 at 4:00pm.
