Marvin H. Sondock, born on September 28, 1933 to Ned Sondock and Tillie R. Sondock, passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen TX at the age of 80.
Marvin was active in DeMolay and served as scribe. He was in the DeMolay degree team that won second in the state. He played trumpet in the Harlingen High School band before graduating in 1951. He attended Texas A&M and became involved in Hillel. He was unable to get a commission and therefore transferred to the University of Houston.
At the University of Houston, he pledged a local fraternity, Alpha Sigma Tau, where he later was elected President. During his year as President, the fraternity associated itself with a national fraternity, Phi Epsilon Phi, as he served as its first President. Marvin continued his religious interest and was a representative of the fraternity at the religious group council at the University of Houston.
Marvin graduated from the University of Houston with a BBA degree. After serving in the military for two years, he returned to Harlingen in 1958 and worked in the family business, Delta Office Supply Company, selling office supplies, machines and furniture.
In 1983, he opened Discount Office Furniture, and successfully ran that business until 2003 when he closed the store and went into semi-retirement. He continued to sell office furniture on a part time basis for the largest office product dealer in the valley on a commission basis.
At the age of 72, he started selling office furniture for Jones & Cook Stationers. He has been an active member of our community, serving as President of the Harlingen Jaycees, President of the Harlingen Rotary Club, a Director of the Harlingen Chamber of Commerce and various other committees in the community.
Marvin was involved in community affairs. He joined the Harlingen Jaycees and was elected President. He was accepted in the Harlingen Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Recipient and served as its President he served on the board of directors of the Harlingen Chamber of Commerce.
He was an avid golfer, past member of Life Begins at 40 and the NHAA Golf Tournament. He was a member of the Temple Beth Israll in Harlingen and a Master Mason.
He is survived by his wife Barbara Ann Sondock; his step children Crystal Renee (Nelson) Tipton, Michael Wayne (Elma) Tipton, Lee Roy Tipton, John M. (Hiedi) Clay; his brother Gerald (Shirley) Sondock, 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Ned and Tillie Sondock.
Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at Restlawn Memorial Park at 3 p.m., Friday, July 11, 2014.
Horary pallbearers will be Benjamin Yudesis, Lee Richards, John Ferris MD, Geane Gill, Larry Schoenemann and Greg Gibson.
