Harlingen, TX- Martin Segura, 73, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, August 18, 2011 surrounded by his loving family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Manuela Segura; his brother, Felix Segura; his sister in law, Amelia Segura; nephew, Ricardo Segura, and niece Patricia Segura.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Cecilia Montemayor Segura; his son, Martin (Renee) Segura III; his daughter, Sandra Denise (Tony) Rodriguez; and five grandchildren, Lorenzo James and Tomas Lige Segura, Miranda Nicole, Alyssa Danielle, and Kyla Elizabeth Rodriguez. his surviving siblings are Concepcion Segura and Antonio Segura of San Benito, and Gilberto (Maria) Segura of San Antonio, Texas; he also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, and close friends.
Martin was born on November, 11, 1937 in San Benito, Texas. He attended Fred Booth Elementary School and graduated from San Benito High School in 1957. While in high school he participated in football, basketball, and track. Martin was proud of the fact that he had been a migrant worker from the time he was a young student through his college years.
From 1957-1959 he attended Texas Southmost College in Brownsville. His sophomore year he was honored to be chosen as Sophomore Class Favorite. Martin attended East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas from 1959-1961. He graduated with a BA degree in elementary education. He went on to receive his Masters of Education in Educational Administration in 1964 from the same institution.
Martin began his teaching career at Zavala elementary in Harlingen in 1961. After nine years as a classroom teacher he was promoted to Assistant Principal at Gay Junior High School. From 1971-1980 he served as principal at Stuart Place Elementary, Dishman Elementary, and Wilson Elementary which he assisted in opening. In 1980 he was appointed Assistant Personnel Officer for HCISD. Then in 1983 he was promoted to Assistant Superintendent for Personnel Services. He retired from that post in June of 1996. He served the HCISD for 35 years.
Martin enjoyed being involved in the community and was always willing to serve. He was selected as officer of the year for the San Benito Junior Chamber of Commerce from 1965-1966. He was also selected as Jaycee of the year from 1967-1968. Martin served as San Benito City Commissioner and Mayor Pro-tem from 1966-1968. He authored the article “Why Politics Needs Educators” in Texas Outlook in 1967. Martin served as a Board of Directors member on the Cameron County Private Industry Council from 1991-1995. He served as a Civil Service Commissioner for the city of Harlingen from 1999-2004 and was reappointed October 2010-present for his second term. He was a current member of the Knight of Columbus Council # 2785. Martin was also a lifetime member of the Texas PTA and TSTA/NEA. He was a member of the Harlingen Mid-Valley Retired Teachers Association for which he served as president from 2000-2002.
Martin was a dedicated and loving son, brother, husband, father, uncle and grandfather. He courageously fought a long, hard battle against cancer in order to spend more time with his grandkids which were the light of his life. He had a passion for golf and enjoyed playing as often as possible. He most enjoyed the camaraderie of his golfing buddies.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 21, 2011 from 10:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 P.M. at San Benito Funeral Home.
Funeral Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, August 22, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Harlingen. Interment will follow to Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito.
Honored to serve as pallbearers will be Fernando Villarreal, Daniel Barron, Placido Cortez, Alberto Galvan, Abe Lopez, and Homer Ramos; honorary pallbearers will be Roberto Perez, Tomas Gonzalez, Federico Oviedo, Jose Chapa, Robert and Mary Alice Tapia, Rosie Olivarez, Mary Perez, Melinda Cantu, and Zoila Gomez.
Martin and Cecilia are parishioners at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and request that in lieu of flowers donations be made to St. Anthony Catholic School.
The family would like to thank Dr. Habib Ghaddar and his gracious staff for all that they did during Martin’s treatment especially Letty, Dorie, and Thelma. Special thanks to Damian Vasquez, RN who was always there for him. Thank you to Dr. Joseph Ludwig and Larae Malapitan, RN from MD Anderson Cancer Center. Special thanks also go to Gloria, Louise, Katie, Tami, and Keith from Odyssey Hospice who took special care of Martin in his last days.
