Martin Peter Ferrero of Harlingen, Texas passed away March 29, 2013 at home surrounded by his family.
Martin was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Nancy Newman Ferrero, his sons Jeffery Paul Ferrero and Matthew Peter Ferrero. He is survived by his children, Nancy Jo Ferrero of South Padre Island, Edward Martin Ferrero of La Feria, Andrew John Ferrero of San Benito, and Patricia Ferrero Mabon of Missouri City, Texas and their spouses. Martin has 5 grandchildren who also mourn his passing, Buddy Cavness, Amy Hardy, Jacqueline Ferrero, Erin York and Edward Martin Ferrero II and their spouses and his five great-grandchildren.
The Ferrero family greatly appreciates the love and support of Martin’s housekeeper of 46 years, Rosa Mireles. The family would also like to thank Martin’s caregivers, Isabel Diaz, Maria Irene Hernandez and Anita Cortez. The family appreciates the medical care of Dr. John Ferris, Maggie and Lupita.
Martin was born May 21, 1922 in San Antonio, Texas to parents Martin and Lorraine Ferrero and was raised by his father and loving stepmother Lavada Ferrero. He attended Brackenridge High School graduating in 1939. After high school he enlisted in the Army in 1940 where he served as Captain in the 8th Army Corps in the 36th and 96th Divisions. During World War II, he fought in Okinawa, Sukinjima, and other islands. He received a Purple Heart after being wounded in the Philippines. Returning to the USA for rehabilitation, he met the love of his life and future wife, Nancy Newman, his physical therapist, in Springfield, Missouri. He retired from service in 1946 and returned to Texas where Martin and Nancy married in Mission, Texas on May 25, 1947. He went on to attend the University of Texas in Austin where he received a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1952.
In 1952 Martin, Nancy and their eldest three children moved to Harlingen where Martin practiced law for Gibbon and Johnson. He continued his law practice establishing his own firm. Martin and his family made their home in Harlingen where he became an integral part of the community. He served as Rio Hondo City attorney, Chairman of the Harlingen Airport Board, and President of the Jaycees in 1960 and was a member of the Lion’s Club and Chamber of Commerce. Martin enjoyed his active membership in the Harlingen Elks Club since 1954. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing in the Rio Grande Valley. Martin and his family, which grew to include 6 children, were active parishioners of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church of Harlingen.
Visitation hours will be from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with a Rosary to be prayed at 7:00 PM, Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at the funeral home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 10:00 AM, Wednesday, April 3, 2013 with interment to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
Honored to serve as pallbearers will be Edward Martin Ferrero, II, Danny Coyle, Brian York, Parke Unangst, Gale Williams, Merril Mabon, Buddy Cavness, and Levi Hardy.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the St. Anthony's Catholic Church building fund.
