Harlingen, TX
MARTHA DEAN HULL, loving daughter, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend went home to join her parents Hugh and Lola Ramsey, Saturday, June 14, 2008. Born September 13, 1925, in Waxahachie, Texas, the family soon moved to Harlingen where she followed in her father’s footsteps in his passion for politics and the people of Harlingen and her mother’s love of flowers, art and music which she passed on to all her children. She incorporated these passions while attending Harlingen High School, graduating in 1943, playing in the band, serving as class vice-president and forming lasting friendships. She continued her family’s passion for Harlingen and worked diligently with her children for the establishment of the Hugh Thomas Ramsey Nature Park and Birding Center. After graduation, she married Laurence Hull and raised a family of four children, Lynn Harper, Carter Hull, Clark Hull, and Allyson Sheffield who were the pride of her life. She is also survived by loving grandchildren, Raymond, Ryan and Holly Sheffield; Cyndi, Christian, and Brian Harper, Kelly Hoover and Leslie Almazan . There are also five great grandchildren who lovingly called her “Great”, and that fit her well. Besides her family, our mother had a passion for playing bridge, the beach, her church, her friends, knitting and her politics. You would either find her planning a bridge game; walking on the beach collecting shells; working at Harlingen First Methodist Church as a volunteer, Sunday school teacher, and choir member; or knitting just one more afghan for a family member or baby sweater for friend’s grandchild. For the last four years Mom lived at Camelot, a lifestyle that she thoroughly enjoyed. The trips to lunch and Mexico, the bridge club at the lodge and the many activities organized by the staff that meant so much to her , she loved her home where she was lovingly taken care of by Linda Chapa and Angie Rodriquez who made it possible for her to remain at her home . Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 18, 2008, from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home with the family present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Harlingen First Methodist Church on Thursday, June 19, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Eddie Valverde officiating. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to the Hugh T. Ramsey Nature Park Fund c/o Arroyo Colorado Audubon Society, P.O. Box 531582, Harlingen, TX. 78553.
