Marlene S. Foale passed away on December 21, 2009 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas.
She was born to Henry A. Shirk and Janette Gallagher Shirk on October 4, 1932 in Gary, Indiana. She graduated from Grant Park High School in Indiana. She married Edwin Harris Foale and moved to Harlingen in 1959 where she became very involved in teaching horsemanship. She was a member of various horse associations, of which one was the Rio Grande Valley Arabian Horse Club where over the years she held various offices. She also helped in implementing the start of the Dressage Club in the Valley.
She is survived by her sons William E. Foale of Washington, DC and John Michael “Mike” Foale (Amy) of Harlingen, Texas. She also had four granddaughters Chrystal M. Foale (Eric) of Ft. Meade, Maryland, and Sarah J. Foale, Kelly L. Foale, and Lauren A. Foale all of Harlingen, Texas. She is also survived by numerous nieces and a nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Joseph B. Shirk, and a sister Betty J. Hoffman.
A memorial service will be on January 2, 2010 at 11a.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen with Rev. David Mann officiating.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the ASPCA, The Tip of Texas K-9 Rescue or an animal charity of their choice.
