Marjorie E. Kohn

San Benito, TX/Westfield, WI-Marjorie Edith Cowles Kohn was born August 25, 1922 to Edith and Alfred Cowles in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin. She attended schools in Oakfield and Hudson, Wisconsin. After graduation, she enlisted in the United States Coast Guard Women’s Reserve in February of 1943 and served at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C. from August of 1943 to November 15, 1945. She continued living in DC until May of 1946 when she transferred to the Veteran’s Administration in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
While serving in the Coast Guard, Margie met the love of her life, Francis Kohn, at a phone booth while calling home, as both were stationed in Washington DC during WWII. Soon after realizing they both were from the same area of Wisconsin, a bond was created that lasted a lifetime. Margie married Francis Eugene Kohn on December 28, 1946. Six sons were born to that marriage – Francis (Judy) Park Falls, WI; Brian (Jennifer) Snohomish, WA; Thomas, (Sally), Orlando, FL who preceded Marjorie in death in 2009; Patrick (Gail) Madison, WI; James San Benito, TX; and Timothy (Darlene) Waunakee, WI. Margie had 19 Grandchildren; Zachary, Amber (Francis); Julie, Scott, Shawn (Brian); Bridget, Robert, Ricky, Laura, Ryan, Sarah (Tom); Melissa, James (Pat); Nicole, Jessica, James, Mary (Jim); Benjamin, and Mackenzie (Tim).
Marjorie and Francis lived in Westfield, WI from 1949 to 1977 and were active members of the school, community, and founding members of Good Shepard Catholic Church. During their time in Westfield they established lifelong friendships with many families in the Westfield and surrounding areas. Marjorie was in charge of the home front, raising six boys (all within 10 years), while Francis was busy being Superintendent of the Westfield School District. Each year Marjorie and Francis would pack up the six boys for trips to all parts of the United States in the Ford Station wagon while pulling a pop-up camper. Marjorie always rode shotgun in the Ford as the navigator, with road atlas in hand, telling Francis every driving direction and detail, without question, Marjorie was in charge! Those trips will forever live in our memories, as they created some of the most memorable events of our childhood years, and resulted in countless retelling of places seen (from coast to coast). When not traveling out of state, the “summer cottage” was a campground in Northern Wisconsin, Boulder Lake; that was visited annually during our childhood years. Boulder Lake was the home of many “Kohn Lore” stories, and even at 92 years of age, Marjorie was hoping to spend time again this year camping at Boulder Lake, but her declining health interfered with those plans. Boulder Lake was a special place for the entire family.
In 1977, Marjorie and Francis moved to the Madison area, and after working for a few years, decided that traveling sounded more fun than working! In 1983 they became full time RV travellers and spent 9 months of the year exploring the country, and summers spent at son James’ home in Mt. Horeb, WI. In 1988 they located in San Benito where Francis passed away and Marjorie stayed on. After Francis’ death, Marjorie got her first driver’s license, and officially was no longer the back seat driver! Marjorie continued to travel during the summer to visit her family around the country, and became the postmistress at the resort she lived in 1990.
Marjorie was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Harlingen, TX, and in 1999 became a parish member of the Queen of the Universe Catholic Church in San Benito. Marjorie was a Eucharistic minister, Lector and Commentator for the parishes in both Harlingen and San Benito.
She was convalescing from an illness at her son James’ home in San Benito when she joined her Francis in heavenly bliss.
Visitation will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, September 20, 2014 at San Benito Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 20, 2014 at Our Lady, Queen of the Universe Catholic Church. Interment will follow at a later date at St. Charles Cemetery in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
