MARILYN ("SKIP") DREW MILLER WELTY
Harlingen, TX:
Marilyn ("Skip") Drew Miller Welty, 90, of Harlingen, TX passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, May 28 (Memorial Day).
She is preceded in death by her husband John, her mother Ethel, her father Albert and her brother Dick.
She is survived by her children: Lyn (Pat) Galvas, Great Falls, MT; Brant (Anne Duncan) Welty, Kyle, TX; and Pete Welty, Harlingen; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Skip grew up in Prescott, Arizona; graduated with an RN from Colorado Training School for Nursing in Denver, 1943; and met the love of her life, an intern, John Allen Welty, whom she married on August 4, 1943 at Evergreen, Colorado.  She was in Times Square with her sister-in-law Alice on VJ Day.  When her husband returned from the war, he completed his residency in pediatrics in Denver and then they moved to the Valley.  They implemented the Polio Treatment Unit at Edinburg and then moved to Harlingen in October, 1948, where they started the Children's Clinic.
She was active in the community, medical organizations, politics, a patron of the arts and was very patriotic.  She loved animals, especially horses.  Skip was generous, loving, witty, and compassionate with a terrific sense of humor that drew people to her.  She kept her mind alert with a daily Jumble and was a puzzle master.
Skip was a daughter, a sister, an orphan, a nurse, a young bride, a mother, a mother-in-law, a doctor's wife, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, a friend, a musician, an artist, a comedienne, a patriot, a matriarch, a cook, a sportsman, an outdoorswoman,  and the hostess with the mostest...and so much more.
The mark she has left in the hearts of her family, friends and acquaintances is indelible.
A celebration of Marilyn’s life will be held Saturday, June 2, at the Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home at 3:00 p.m.
