Mrs. Maria Danache Conde
October 21, 1914 — March 20, 2010
Mrs. Maria Danache Conde, civic activist and pioneer resident of San Benito, died in her home after a prolonged illness. She was 95 years old.
She was the wife of long-time San Benito businessman, the late Juan H. Conde and the mother of well-known San Benito natives, Juan R. Conde, a former football staff member under University of Texas' Darrell K. Royal and Carlos D. Conde, journalist and ex-Nixon White House aide.
Mrs. Conde was born October 21, 1914 in San Benito to Jose Danache, a businessman and one of the early settlers in the area, in a family that included three sisters and three brothers, all deceased with the exception of Gloria Danache Villareal.
She was educated in the local parochial and public schools and worked for many years in some of the city's businesses as a secretary and in sales. She was a life long member of St. Benedict Catholic Church.
Mrs. Conde was an active participant in her hometown's civic and political affairs. She served several terms on the San Benito Housing Authority and consulted on various local public issues.
Mrs. Conde is survived by sons, Juan R. Conde (Graciela) of Austin, Texas and Carlos D. Conde (Macksyne) of Boca Raton, Florida, three grandchildren, Carlos V. Conde of Highland Beach, Fl., Carla C. Conde de Papadopoulos of MIAMI, Fl. and Carmela M. Conde de Vega of Lima, Peru.
Survivors also include five great grandchildren: Carlos Mateo Conde, Marco Aurelio Conde, Ms. Zoe Valeria Vega, Ms. Sofia Vega and Antonio Carlos Papadopoulos.
Also surviving are Juan Conde's step-children, Celina Rebecca Muniz, Marco Antonio Zapata and Marissa Adriana Orgado.
Pall bearers are Arnold Garnett, Carlos V. Conde, Agustin Sierra, Hector Guerra, Victor Trevino and Jose Alfonso Danache.
Honorary pall bearers are Lupe Conde, Adalberto Ramirez, Alberto Garcia, Cresencio Rodriguez and Mauricio Flores.
Visitation will be held Tuesday March 23,2010 from 3:00pm to 9:00pm with a Holy Rosary at 7:30pm that same evening at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral service will be on March 24, 2010 at 10:00am at St.Benedicts Catholic Church with Interment to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
