Maria de la Luz (Quintanilla) Cerda

May 7, 1944 — December 20, 2017

Maria de la Luz Cerda, loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed into eternal life on Wednesday, December 20, 2017.  She was born in San Fernando, Tamaulipas, Mexico on May 7, 1944 to Ruperto Quintanilla and Guadalupe Sosa.  Maria de la Luz married Joaquin Cerda with whom she shared life for 47 years.  Joaquin and Maria de la Luz were blessed with two children, Julio and Hortencia.

For over twenty years, Maria de la Luz was well known in San Benito and the surrounding area for her artistic talent as a seamstress.  Many San Benito High School cheerleaders and San Benito Belles, as well as other school organization members, quinceañeras, and brides wore the work of her skillful hands.  She was a great friend to many and a wonderful, giving human being.  Maria de la Luz was a family organizer, participated in church prayer groups, and always made sure her family’s cares and needs were met.

Left to carry on her legacy and treasure her memory are her husband, Joaquin Cerda; son, Julio Cerda (Cuquis Villarreal); daughter, Hortencia Cerda Delorme (Guennal); grandchildren, Marcela Cerda, Ana Paola Cerda, Julian Delorme, Andrea Delorme, and Julio Alberto Cerda.

Maria de la Luz was preceded in death by her parents, Ruperto Quintanilla and Guadalupe Sosa de Quintanilla, and her brother, Ruperto Quintanilla.

The Cerda family will be receiving friends and relatives on Friday, December 22, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at San Benito Funeral Home.  The Holy Rosary will be recited that evening beginning at 7:00 p.m.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, December 23, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church in San Benito, where Maria de la Luz was an active parishioner and participated in various prayer groups.  Funeral services for Maria de la Luz will conclude at the close of the funeral mass.
