Harlingen:
Marguerite John Mattar, 92, passed away on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas.
Marguerite was born November 14, 1917 in Valentine, Nebraska to Abraham and Cecelia John. She graduated from Harlingen High School in 1932. Marguerite attended college for a few years then went to work at Lackland Air Force Base in purchasing. She then worked for Postal Telegraph in Harlingen for several years. In 1938 she partnered with her husband and his brothers in Mattar Brothers Store for Men in Weslaco. They then started the Fabric Fair in 1958, Tops and Bottoms in 1975, and owned and operated Fred Mattar Sales Co. from 1938 to 2002.
Marguerite was a member of St. Pius Catholic Church serving as president in the Women’s Guild while living in Weslaco and then became a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Harlingen. She had a passion for bridge, golf, and especially reading, where in Weslaco she was instrumental in the first library being built. She was a member of the Junior League of Weslaco, the Chaturic Club, the Twelve Thirty Club, where she was a former president.
Marguerite was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Mattar; her parents, Abraham and Cecelia John; brothers, Phillip (Elizabeth) John, James (Cleo) John, William John; and sister, Maurie (Chris) Grosse.
She is survived by her daughter, Cece Case of Dallas; son, Michael (Elayne) Mattar of Harlingen; grandchildren, Stefani Case and Tracy (Matt) Pickelman both of Dallas, Michelle Mattar, Mark (Veronyca) Milam, Matt (Kari) Milam and Misty Milam (Jeff) Scott all of Harlingen; five great grandchildren; one brother, George (Nancy) John of Harlingen; sisters-in-law: Sybil Mattar and Mary Mattar both of Weslaco and Roberta John of Brownsville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation hours will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary to be prayed at 6:30 p.m.
Graveside services will be held at Weslaco City Cemetery, 1001 S. Illinois St., Weslaco, TX 78596, on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 11:00 a.m.
Pallbearers will be Phillip John Jr., Jimmy John, Pete Grosse, Bill Mattar and Nelson Matttar.
