Peggy Quellhorst

August 26, 1941 — December 17, 2018

Harlingen resident Margaret Ann “Peggy” Quellhorst, 77, died Monday following a rapid decline in health. Quellhorst had been an active member of the Eastgate Mobile Home & RV Park community. In the 1970’s and early 1980’s, Quellhorst had owned two Tiffany Bakeries in Brownsville and managed a number of restaurants and night clubs throughout the lower Rio Grande Valley, including the McAllen Country Club restaurant and the restaurant/clubs at McAllen Holiday Inn and Bahia Mar on South Padre Island. She had also managed the Fort Brown Restaurant and Resaca Club during the height of its popularity. There, she hosted performances by up-and-coming bands such as Mazz. Quellhorst also managed the Officer Clubs at Kingsville Naval Air Station and Kings Bay, Georgia. Her career ended after she suffered a work-related injury at a restaurant in Arizona. Afterward, Quellhorst occasionally sold crafts and worked independently as a seamstress. She often enjoyed baking treats and sewing clothes and quilts as gifts for her family and close friends.

Quellhorst is preceded in death by her parents, Ralph Emmet and Gertrude Irene Bigley; her brother, Joseph Bigley; and her ex-husband, William Hendrik Quellhorst of Arroyo City.

She is survived by two sisters, Mary Mathews and Jean Miller of Ohio; her son and his wife, William J. and Sherry Quellhorst of Los Fresnos; two grandchildren, Anneka Quellhorst of San Francisco and Leslie Frakes (married to Brady Frakes) of Bishop, Texas; and one great-grandson, Forrest Frakes of Bishop.

A memorial service will be held from 4-6 p.m. Friday at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
