Harlingen:
Mardelle Lou Ayers, 81, entered into eternal rest on Monday, January 5, 2009. She was born in Harlingen, Texas, and was a resident of Camelot Retirement Village.
Mardelle was the daughter of Lawson and Olive Anglin. The Anglin family was a pioneer family of Harlingen, which included her grandfather, Emmit W. (Pappa) Anglin, the first police chief of Harlingen and a judge who lived and served Harlingen in the early 1900’s. Their historical home is located just east of Casa De Sol.
Mardelle was preceded in death by the love of her life and husband of 45 years, William (Bill) H. Ayers, former automobile dealer for over 40 years in Harlingen, and by her sister Anita Lucas of Houston, Texas and grandsons, Matthew and Ronnie Gonzales of Rio Hondo, Texas.
Mardelle was active for many years in the Coterie Club and the Harlingen Garden Club, and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Harlingen. She was an avid Bunco and Bingo enthusiast.
Survivors include children, son William and wife Tricia Ayers of San Benito, and daughters Vicki and husband Richard Gonzales of Rio Hondo, Kathryn Jackson of Harlingen, and Marlee and husband Tom Green of San Antonio, Texas. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Special thanks to Minnie Alfaro and Carlotta Ceja, her caregivers, for all the patience and kindness they provided Mardelle through her illness.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, January 9, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen, with Pastor Justin Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito.
