Maria Antonia Gomez

Maria “Toni” A. Gomez, 81, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 5, 2024 surrounded by her family at her residence. She was born on May 27th, 1943 to Enrique and Ramona “Moni” Torres. 

Toni was united in marriage to Valdo Gomez in 1964 and they spent the next 56 years together until his death in 2020. She was employed with AT& T in Montgomery Works, IL for 10 years, followed by over 30 years with Harlingen ISD until her retirement in 2014. 

She was a longtime member of the Queen of the Universe Catholic Church in San Benito, Toni enjoyed reading, bird watching taking care of her grandkids, gardening, traveling and Sunday cruising with her husband.

Toni is survived by her only child, Beckie Ann Benavides; two grandchildren, Louie Benavides IV (Jewelle) and Stephanie Benavides; siblings, Rachel Alvarez, Enrique Torres, Jr. (Chefi), Beda Hernandez (Noe), Mary Jane Mata (Albert), Debra Torres (Diana); aunts, Maria Lafon and Victoria Gibbs. 

She is preceded in death by her parents, Enrique Torres and Ramona Rodriguez, step-father, Catarino Rodriguez; brothers-in-law, Ernesto Alvarez and Mauro Gonzalez; sister, Irene Gonzalez; and aunt and uncle, Manuel and Gloria Becerra.

The family expresses gratitude to Jicela Sanchez, Zulema Villegas, and Gentiva Hospice for their compassionate care and support.

Visitation will be on Friday, August 9, 2024 from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home. A recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 7 o’clock on Friday evening. A Mass will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of the Universe Catholic Church in San Benito. Services will conclude after the Mass.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are Louie Benavides IV, Steve Rodriguez, Robert Becerra, Joseph Becerra, Robbie Becerra, and Nicholas Becerra. Honorary pallbearer will be Rudy Rodriguez.
