Maj. Larry Gene Bennett (U.S. Army, Ret.) of South Padre Island, Texas, died on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 79 years of age. He was born to the late Neil and Irene Bennett on November 17, 1942 in Hammond, Indiana.
Larry spent much of his childhood in Harlingen, Texas, including three years at Harlingen High School, before relocating to Nevada for his senior year of high school. He attended the University of Nevada for his undergraduate studies earning a Bachelor of Science in Education and Florida Institute of Technology for his Master of Science degree.
He served his country as a United States Army Ranger and a UH-1 “Huey” helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War. After the war, Larry continued his military career attaining the rank of Major serving in Germany as Signal Officer for the 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade. After retiring from active duty, Larry continued as a civil servant for U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) in Ft. Monmouth, New Jersey. In 1994, Larry retired from CECOM and relocated from Freehold, New Jersey to Texas.
Larry’s parents and his brother, Lee, preceded him in death.
Left to treasure his memory is his spouse, Sue; sons, Tom (Julie) and Steve (Kathleen); and grandchildren, Alison, Caitlin, Lauren, Megan, and Dominic.
A memorial service will take place on Thursday, March 10, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home. Larry will be laid to rest with full military honors on Friday, March 11, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission, Texas.
