La Feria, TX:
Machiko Shimotsu, beloved wife of Harry Shimotsu, passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, October 28, 2012. Born on the Coast of California, one of six children of Shintaro and Asa Hanawa, “Machi” and her family lived and worked on the farm in Cayucos, San Luis Obispo County, California until relocated during WWII to the interior of California. Since she had started to further her education in the field of nursing at UC Berkley, she later finished her education in nursing in Colorado. After the war, the Hanawa family moved to the Rio Grande Valley of Texas where she met and married Harry Shimotsu and began her life raising and caring for their family.
She is survived by her husband Harry and their four children, Gary, Grace, Karen and Ron (Roxanna) Shimotsu and their children/her grandchildren, Geoffrey and Lauren. It is important to include her brother Kay Hanawa and sister Rose Tanaka, and nieces and nephews each of whom she held dear.
She was preceded in death by her two brothers Henry and Thomas Hanawa.
Machiko loved flowers but she knew that the beauty was momentary, instead of flowers, we know that she would appreciate a donation to be given to the charity of your choice or to the Sharyland ISD Education Foundation, Shimotsu Elementary Attn: Dr. Melissa Martinez, 1106 N. Shary Road, Mission, Texas 78572.
A memorial service will be Saturday, November 3, 2012, 11:00 AM, at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, 710 Ed Carey Dr. Harlingen, Texas 78550.
