Luella DeViney White

Luella “Lu” DeViney White was born February 7, 1918 to Robert Nolan and Louise DeViney on a farm at Martindale, Texas.  She was one of four children, having two brothers Robert Dawson (LaRue) both deceased and William Nolan (Carolyn) of Del Rio, TX and one sister, Mary Louise Wilkinson of Crane, Texas.           Lu passed away on January 6, 2009.
Luella attended 1st through 11th grades at Martindale (Texas added the 12th grade later) before attending Southwest State Teacher’s College at San Marcos, where she became a baptized member of the First Christian Church, later transferring to Harlingen, where she was an active member for over 50 years.
She worked as a telephone operator before marrying Alton C. White of Randolph Field, Texas October 7, 1939, the beginning of 67 years of marriage.  His Air Force career took them to many states and Japan.
During those years, they had four surviving children: Larry Phillip White, Mark Stephen White (Donna), and Janice Lynn Miller (Mike) of Harlingen and Keith Alan White of Austin.
Also surviving are two grandchildren; Leah Daye Van Meter (Trey) of Corpus Christi and Daniel Lovelace (Liz) of New Braunfels, as well as two sisters-in-law; Gladys Trerise (Lloyd) and Lorna Van Hook of Clarkston, Washington, plus many nieces and nephews
Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 7, 2009 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2009, 10 a.m., at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria with Rev. Mark Coppins, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Christian Church 421 S. 13th St., Harlingen, TX 78550.
