Goliad/San Benito, TX:
Lorraine Truax Hartman was born January 21, 1933 in Three Rivers, Texas and left this earth on January 15, 2009. In her words when talking about Goliad; her home for the last seven years of her life, “had I known about this wonderful town, I would have moved here years ago. My years here have been above and beyond in happiness.” She was active in St. John’s Lutheran Church both here in Goliad and in her previous hometown of San Benito, Texas.
She was a loving wife to Elmo Hartman, mother to Debi (Bobby) Lange, Paul (Michele) Truax and Missy (Sam) Morrow. She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren, Belinda (John) Webb, Jason Hicks, Jeff (Mischa) Truax, Brad Truax, and Ally Denkeler. Her smile would brighten when her great-granddaughter Avery Webb was around.
She spent her time in Goliad between St. John Lutheran Church and Immaculate Conception. The Astron Club was dear to her heart along with her fellow Red Hatters. Her faith was deepened by the time spent with the Ruth Circle and the Empresario and Carriage House will miss a good customer.
Prior to moving to Goliad, she was a long time resident of San Benito where she was employed by the Harlingen Area Teacher’s Credit Union and Harlingen Municipal Federal Credit Union. She and her previous husband of 44 years, Hatch (Uncle Peanut) owned and operated Truax Drive in Grocery in San Benito for 17 years. They were active in Elks Lodge and Coin Collectors Club.
She loved her hats and hated it when she felt out-hatted in church; she would go on a hat search to ensure that it wouldn’t happen. She had been sick and fighting cancer of one sort or another since 2001. She had Elmo create the 11th commandment “Thou Shalt Not Whine”. That is a good picture of the faith and courage that she had. She faced this terrible disease head on, and whether it was chemo or radiation, she was always smiling.
She is survived by her sisters Theo, Earlene, Doris, Jean and one brother Kenneth. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. She was reintroduced to an old high school flame, Elmo by her oldest brother Joe Odom in 2001 and they married in 2002. They celebrated their 7th anniversary on the 12th of January. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews and long-time friends.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2009 from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home with the family present from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
