Lorene A. Meyners

Lorene A. Meyners, 87, passed away on June 29, 2010 at Valley Baptist Medical Center Harlingen.
She was born to the late Santos Armand Valdez, Jr. and Agnes Eguia Valdez in Brownsville on September 21, 1922.  Lorene graduated from Weslaco High School in 1940 and was married for 48 years to the late Frank A. Meyners.
While growing up in Weslaco, Lorene spent many summers with her family on Boca Chica Beach.  She, Frank and the children eventually settled in Port Isabel in 1952, where her love of the beach was instilled in each of them as they spent many hours camping, beachcombing and surf fishing on South Padre Island.  Following a move to Brownsville in 1963, Lorene was employed as manager of Valley Inn & Country Club Motel for several years and later worked as a bookkeeper for various companies in Edinburg. Lorene and Frank retired to Utopia, Texas in 1977, and returned to Harlingen in 1984.  Lorene was a member of the North Cameron County Republican Club and was an active volunteer for many years with the Harlingen Area Chamber of Commerce.
Lorene is survived by her son Frank Meyners, Jr. and wife Denise, and daughter Crisanne Zamponi and husband Larry.
Lorene is also survived by her sisters Frances (Vernon) Porter; Cynthia Needham; Alice (Jack) Newman; Jennifer Ashley; Clara (Tim) Downey; brothers Stephen and Tim (Rhonda) Valdez; and daughter-in-law Andrea Sue Meyners.
She is also fondly remembered by 11 grandchildren: Christina (Craig) Lancaster; Judith (Trey) Thurston; Chad (Maura) Beckett; Matt Beckett; Amanda (Fred) De Sota; Sean (Ginger) Meyners; Amy (Josh) Lehman Meeks; Charles Lehman;  Gina (Ronnie) Evans; Rex (Amy) Zamponi; Dax (Kym) Zamponi; and 13 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband Frank, Lorene was preceded in death by her son Michael Meyners; brother Gene and wife Bessie Lofton; sister Mary Sue and husband Roy Byrd; sister Dorothy Ann Hudson; aunt Evangeline Valdez; step-mother Lucille Valdez; grandparents Eugene and Susie Eguia; and Santos and Alice Rousset Valdez.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, July 10, 2010 in the Texas Room, 6th floor, Golden Palms Retirement & Health Center, 2101 Treasure Hills Blvd, in Harlingen.  A private family burial will be held at a later date.
Lorene’s family would like to thank the dedicated staff at Golden Palms for the loving care they gave her and Adela Lorene Chidester for sharing her friendship and her name with Lorene.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Humane Society of Harlingen.
