Loraine Johnston

August 26, 1942 — October 3, 2012

South Padre Island, TX:
Loraine A. Johnston, 70, passed away on October 3, 2012 in Harlingen, Texas.
Loraine was born in Louisiana, August 26, 1942, and then moved to Texas as a young child.  Her mother, Jane Pearl Guidry’s second marriage was to Robert W. Johnston, who took care of Loraine and Chester in a loving, caring family along with his daughter, Barbara Metzler.  When they were teens, her mother had another child, Rob Johnston, who brought love and joy to the family. Eventually Loraine married Dr. Kent Upchurch and was a stepmom to his children.  She learned to enjoy fishing, hunting, horse-back riding and travel during those years in Pasadena.  She married a second time to Jim Pace and lived for a few years in Buffalo, Texas and enjoyed ranching before they moved to Boardwalk in South Padre Island.
She was happiest in South Padre Island with her friends, especially enjoying the Ladies’ Kingfishing Tournament (LKT). A fond memory was traveling to Cozumel for a fishing trip.  As a widow, she stayed in South Padre Island and never wanted to leave. Through those years, she enjoyed cooking and decorating for her family during holidays and in the summer.  Her nieces, Janie Williams and Jolie Moulton, enjoyed deep sea fishing, sunbathing, and playing games on these trips. Her brother, Rob, lives in Charlotte, North Carolina and his memories were made at a younger age with “Lolly”. His wife is Missy Johnston and the children are Bria and Cole Johnston.
Loraine was active in the community. She was in the SPI Chamber of Commerce since 1992 and awarded the Volunteer of the Year in 2005.  Graduating from Leadership class in the Laguna Madre Class 3 was important to her.  She enjoyed recruiting new members and volunteered for every major Chamber event.  She also volunteered for Walk for Women, CVB Special Events for Charity and RGV Chili Cook-off for Charity.  She was a strong supporter and advocate for the Brownsville Friendship of Women by regularly serving to gather and deliver donations to this United Way Charity.
She will be missed by everyone but welcomed in Heaven by her Mother, Jane Pearl Johnston.
Her memorial service will be held Saturday, October 20, 2012, 11:00 a.m., at Chapel by the Sea in South Padre Island.
The family requests, memorial donations to be made to the American Cancer Society, Memorial Program, P.O. Box 1532, Harlingen, Texas 78551.
