Harlingen, TX - Leofredo G. Muniz, M.D., FAAFP, passed from this earth to meet his Creator.
Leofredo is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Andreina T. Muniz; his children, Melinda (Tony) O’Neill, Sergio (Victoria) Muniz, USAF, Ret., Joseph Muniz and Sandra McKinney; grandchildren, Dominique Muniz, Alexis Muniz, Chrystal Muniz, Julia McKinney, Emily McKinney, Luisa Marie O’Neill, Terrence O’Neill, Andrea O’Neill; great grandson, James Joseph O’Neill; brothers, Andres G. (Dahlia) Muniz, Jr., Robert (Lupita) Muniz, Edelmiro (Alicia) Muniz, Edward (Daisy) Muniz, and Richard (Dolores) Muniz; and half-sister, Genoveva Martinez.
He was born on December 26, 1931 in Harlingen, Texas to Andres Muniz and Clemencia Garcia Muniz.
Leofredo graduated from Harlingen High School in 1950. He received his undergraduate degree from Texas A & M University and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Galveston.
Dr. Muniz was a highly regarded family physician, who paid special attention to all his patients, and considered kindness and listening just as important as any treatment his patients received. Dr. Muniz served on many professional committees with the Valley Baptist Medical Center. He was recognized by the Consumer Research Council of America as one of America’s Top Family Doctors in 2007.
Dr. Muniz was a natural athlete. He was an outstanding high school football and basketball player. His high school friends and classmates still recall his success on the football field. Golfing was a life long source of enjoyment for him. He played in multiple tournaments and golf courses in the United States and Mexico. But he most enjoyed his golf games with his family and friends at the local golf courses.
Visitation hours will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2008 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and at Queen of Peace Catholic Church from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m.
The funeral procession will depart the Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home on Friday, April 4, 2008 at 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with Father William T. Penderghest, SS. CC., as the celebrant. Interment will follow at Mont Memorial Park in San Benito, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Robert Muniz, Edward Muniz, Dr. Homero Aguilar, Dr. John Ferris, Dr. Raul Garza, Dr. Thomas Klug, James Anthony O’Neill and Robert Scoggins.
Serving as honorary pallbearers are Andres G. Muniz, Jr., Col. Edelmiro Muniz, USAF, Ret., Col. Roy Alvarez, USA, Ret., Dr. Abraham Cano, Dr. Manuel Gomez and Carlos Ramos.
The family would like to thank Dr. Todd Shenkenberg and Dr. Indal M. Seudeal for their care and attention.
