Harlingen:
Lela Lavon Curry, 90, passed away Thursday, March 3, 2011 at Retama Manor Nursing Home.
Lavon was born in Moville, Iowa to Delbert and Violet Hodgen and grew up in Kingsley, Iowa. She attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. She married Charles William Curry on March 20, 1943. After Chuck’s service as a B-29 navigator in WW II, the family moved to Harlingen in 1947. Chuck and Lavon raised 7 children in their life together. After Chuck passed away on December 20, 1986, Lavon continued her lifelong devotion to her children, grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
She served the Lord at First Baptist Church in Combes for many years, working in various ministries at her church. Throughout her whole life, Lavon was a perfect example of Love, Kindness, and Forgiveness to her family and others.
Lavon, growing up as an only daughter, knew the wanted a big family someday. She and Chuck were blessed with 3 sons and 4 daughters. Those 7 children were her crown of glory and they are Sharon (Doug) Hansen, Craig (Sharon) Curry, Candyce (Gary) Crouch, Jan (Russell) Sorell, Clark Curry, Jill (Steve) Hollon and Clint (Angie) Curry. Her gentle legacy is also continued by 16 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; brother, Andy (Sally) Hodgen; and sister-in-law: JoAnn (Nate) Coleman.
Lavon devoted her life to loving and caring for her family. She modeled a life of a virtuous woman as described in Proverbs 31. Her children do rise and call her “blessed’.
Lavon was one of a kind, who could count the number of meals, or cookies, or cakes she made in her lifetime! Or how many children or teens she took in to love and feed! What a role model she was for her children to follow. We all long to be like our Mother….
