Lawrence Nathan (Butch) Winters was 80 living in Harlingen, Texas when he died at VBMC on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 after a long and hard fought illness surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Ft. Worth, Texas to parents Pauline and Lawrence Nathan Winters on October 25, 1937, Nathan had one younger sister, Nancy. Nathan was also raised by his stepdad, Lee Brunson, whom he loved and admired as well. They grew up in Hillsboro, Texas before moving to Harlingen in 1951. Nathan graduated from Harlingen High School and attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. Nathan’s career as a Valley Wide Banker started in the mailroom at First National Bank Harlingen, followed by Elsa State Bank and onto organizing acquisitions of local community banks as an investor and shareholder specifically First State Bank Edinburg, Security State Bank Pharr and San Benito Bank and Trust. With his many banking accomplishments, he received the “Distinguished Banker Award”. He served on numerous Boards including Texas State Bank, Valley Baptist Health Systems Foundation, Harlingen Chamber of Commerce, Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas and many more. Awards also included the Girl Scout Award of Distinction as the first male honoree, American Heart Association to name a few.
Nathan is survived by his loving wife, Betty Moody Winters, daughter Laura Ann Rebello (Jonathan), son Lawrence Nathan Winters III, daughter Ashlee Elizabeth Winters. Grandaughter’s Allison Margaret and Courtney Jane Rebello. As well as his sister Nancy (Bobby), nephew Robert Newton (Michelle) and mother in law Ann Moody. Nathan is preceded in death by Lawrence Nathan Winters, Pauline Winters Brunson, Lee Brunson, his father-in law Gene Moody as well and his son Stephen Mark Winters.
He loved life to its fullest and his legacy to his family will live on forever. We will miss him greatly. His greatest joy was picking up lunch checks throughout the community
he loved so dearly.
Visitation will be Friday, July 20, 2018 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home from 6pm-8pm with the family present. Funeral Service will be Saturday, July 21, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church, Harlingen at 3pm.
In lieu of flowers, Donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church at 321 East Harrison Avenue, Harlingen, Texas 78550.
