Lawrence "Larry" Onderdonk 75, a loving husband, talented businessman, and creative individual, passed away on January 29, 2024, at his home in Harlingen, Texas. Surrounded by his cherished family, Larry left behind a legacy of hard work, perfectionism, and the ability to turn imagination into reality.
Born on March 4, 1948, in Mercedes, Texas, Larry was the son of William Austin Onderdonk Sr. and Evelyn Claire Rollins Onderdonk. Growing up in a large family alongside his sisters Marjorie Nell Onderdonk Fiveash, Charlotte Onderdonk English, Billie Jean Onderdonk Maloy, Mary Ann Onderdonk Dickey, Sarah Jane Onderdonk Carruthers, Evelyn Claire Onderdonk Holland and brothers John Gilbert Onderdonk and William Austin Onderdonk Jr., Larry knew the importance of love and kinship from an early age.
After completing his education at Mercedes High School in 1966, Larry embarked on a career that spanned various industries. He first worked for South Texas Oil Mill in the early '70s before transitioning to Valley Ready Mix which later became Varmicon. His dedication and commitment were evident as he climbed the ranks from assistant manager at the Harlingen Concrete Plant to manager of the Weslaco & McAllen Plant.
However, Larry's entrepreneurial spirit ultimately led him to establish his own business in 1981 - Dutch Marble Creations. Known for his perfectionism and impeccable attention to detail, Larry brought his unique vision to life through his creations. His ability to visualize a project before it even began was truly remarkable.
Sarah Ann Smith Onderdonk was not only Larry's high school sweetheart but also his beloved wife of 55 years. Their love and commitment were an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing them. Together, they created a life filled with love, laughter, and shared passions.
Larry's creativity knew no bounds. He possessed a remarkable talent for designing and building various objects, including intricate birdhouses. His passion for craftsmanship extended beyond his personal endeavors. Larry even lent his expertise to Sarah in designing and creating beautiful bullet jewelry.
Throughout his life, Larry found solace and strength in his faith. A member of the 8th & Harrison Church of Christ since 1969, he embodied compassion, kindness, and a genuine love for others. Larry's unwavering faith served as a guiding light in his journey.
Larry leaves behind a profound impact on those who loved him dearly. He will be deeply missed by his surviving family members, including his wife Sarah Ann Smith Orderdonk, brothers Ernest (Florence) Onderdonk, Bobby (Linda) Onderdonk, Daniel Onderdonk.
In our hearts and memories, Larry will forever remain as an extraordinary individual who taught us the value of perseverance and hard work. His creative spirit and unwavering pursuit of perfection will continue to inspire us all.
The Onderdonk family will receive friends and relatives on Friday, February 2, 2024 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the 8th and Harrison Church of Christ, 801 E Harrison Ave, Harlingen, Texas 78550. Larry will be laid to rest on Monday, February 5, 2024 at 2 o'clock at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Sunny Glen Childrens Home.
