Larry Dale Horkman, Sr., passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September 19, 2011. Larry, the youngest of four children, was born on October 23, 1936, in Harlingen, Texas, to Phillip Myers Horkman and Olive Barg Horkman. He was married to Joyce (Taylor) Horkman for 25 joy-filled years. Larry had one son, Larry Dale (Cheri) Horkman, Jr., and two stepchildren, Cynthia (Mike) Tilden and Michael (Debbie) Rickert.
Larry is survived by his son and step-children and their spouses, as well as his sister, Marie Ann Freeman; grandchildren, Jerry Tilden, Denise Rickert, and Michael Rickert; great-grandchildren, Taylor Tilden, Ryan Tilden, and Peyton Rickert, nephews Randy Horkman, Chip Freeman, Brett Horkman, and Justin Horkman, niece Kathy Leonard, cousins Robert (Evelyn) Barg, Marian James, Terry Joe Horkman, and Janelle Gillit and sisters-in-law Elise Horkman and Loretta Horkman.
Larry was preceded in death by parents Phillip Myers Horkman and Olive Barg Horkman, his beloved wife Joyce, and his brothers James and Alan.
Larry served in the Army as a surveyor in Germany from 1957-1960. After honorable discharge, he worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for nearly 30 years, retiring in 1992. In his retirement, he enjoyed travelling, woodworks, fishing, and spending time with his family. He also loved watching the San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Cowboys on television, and he rarely ever missed a game.
Larry was a generous, out-going man who never knew a stranger. He loved his family and close friends profoundly, and he will be greatly missed.
The family would especially like to thank family friend Marta Bocanegra as well as Janie and Christina at the South Texas Heart Clinic and Odyssey Hospice.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 21, 2011, at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with the family present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Chapel services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 22, 2011, at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, with Rev. Chris Hall officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Tilden, Michael Rickert, Ryan Tilden, Randy Horkman, Brett Horkman and Justin Horkman
