Kenneth Douglas Stone, age 78, passed away, surrounded by his family, August 22, 2008 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Kenneth Stone and Marjorie Stone, and by his daughter, Deirdre Ann Stone.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Stone; his son, Boyd Douglas Stone; his grandchildren Jennifer and Carrie Steeples; and many friends.
Doug was born January 11, 1930 in St. Louis, MO. He was very talented in music and in seventh grade he was accepted to play in the high school band in Webster Groves, MO. He moved with his family to Harlingen when he was in the ninth grade. He met his wife-to-be, Ann, in 1947 and they have been together ever since. Upon graduation from high school he was awarded a scholarship to Juillard School of Music in New York City, but was unable to attend because of additional finances needed. He attended Hardin Simmons College in Abilene his freshman year as a full scholarship student and his sophomore year he was awarded a full scholarship to North Texas State University in Denton where he received his Bachelor's and his Master's degrees in music education. His major band instrument was percussion. While in college he was a member of the honorary music society Phi Mu Alpha and the band fraternity Kappa Kappa Psi. With Ann and his infant son, Boyd, he returned to Harlingen in 1954. He was a band director in Brownsville and Harlingen and then changed to administration in education. He was a principal at James Bowie School and Coakley middle school. He then moved to the main administration building and took the job of Superintendent of Federal Aid; he was also in charge of the high school decathlon. During his years in Harlingen he was tympanist for the Valley Symphony Orchestra for thirty years and tympanist for the South Texas Chorale Festival Orchestra since its inception. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Harlingen and served as an elder three terms. He also served on the Harlingen School Board for one term. Hobbies he and his wife did include archery, flying, motorcycling, boating, water skiing, bicycling and radio-controlled model airplanes. He was a pilot in the Civil Air Patrol and the Confederate Air Force.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 402 E. Jackson, on Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. with Reverend Justin Jones officiating. If desired, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Harlingen.
