Julius B. Oakgrove, 73, was born on May 23, 1937 on the Red Lake Reservation in Minnesota where he was raised, and died on December 17, 2010 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen Texas.
There will be a service to celebrate his life on Tuesday, December 21st at 10:00 a.m. at the Camelot Retirement Village main lodge.
The son of Sarah Boye and Brown Oakgrove, he was a proud member of the Chippewa Nation and was renowned in Red Lake for his prowess as a football, basketball and baseball player.
A military veteran, Mr. Oakgrove served four years in the United States Navy.
He worked for the United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs for 27 years in Anchorage, Alaska and Bemidji, Minnesota, where he retired in 1990 as a Contract Section Branch Chief.
Mr. Oakgrove is best remembered for his pride as a member of the Chippewa Nation, his sense of humor, his love of sports, particularly golf, and most of all, his gentle spirit.
Mr. Oakgrove is survived by his wife Virginia and his brother Jim.
