Julie Gallaher Uhlhorn died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Harlingen Saturday, October 25, 2008. She was 78. She is survived by her three children; Martha Uhlhorn (MaryAnn Lingg) St. Louis, Missouri; Tudor Uhlhorn (Katherine, Cutter 17, Hubbard 15 and Seton 12) Harlingen, Texas; Julie Hunt Uhlhorn Allen (Mike, Morgan 12 and Annie 8) Singapore, Singapore.
Julie was born in Harlingen in 1930. She was the only child of Dr. George L. and Blanche Tudor Gallaher. She graduated from Harlingen High School in 1947 at the age of 16 and graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1951. She and H. M. “Tock” Uhlhorn (deceased on 11/20/80) were married in December 1952. They joined St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in 1960 and Julie has been an active member for 48 years, serving as a member of the Vestry, Sunday school teacher and on numerous other committees. She served on both the Texas State Bank and Texas Regional Bancshares Board of Directors, the Girl Scout Council, the Harlingen Area Chamber of Commerce and the Gladys Porter Zoo. She was also a member/volunteer of the Algodon Club, the Harlingen Historical Preservation Society, the DAR and Chapter CW of P.E.O.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Julie’s caretakers, Christina Garcia, Esmeralda Saldivar and Annie Laguna for their patient, gentle and loving care. They would also like to thank Alberto Macias, Albino Gonzalez and Frank Argullin for their invaluable assistance throughout the years in helping Julie with her continuous stream of “projects” and also helping to maintain her home. Julie never saw a project that she and her team of helpers could not handle!
Julie will be fondly remembered for her love of cooking, entertaining in her home, her passion for gardening and helping others.
The pallbearers will be David Pratt, Michael Murphy, Bill Youngblood, Greg Quisenberry, Bryan Duffy, Chris Boswell, Jim Trolinger, Jimmy Cobb and Ron Levine.
Honorary Pallbearers are Dr. Sam Carter Jr., Frank Boggus, Lloyd Pratt, Billy Busa, James Russell, Bob Duncan, Pat Liston, Glen Roney, Dr. Ken Landrum and the all of the former Board of Directors of Texas State Bank and Texas Regional Bancshares, Inc.
Visitation will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home (710 Ed Carey Drive, Harlingen, Texas 78550) from 12:00 noon to 9:00 pm on Wednesday October, 29th with the family receiving guests from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday October 30th at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, Harlingen. A reception will be held in the St. Alban’s Parish Hall immediately following the service.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 1417 E. Austin Avenue, Harlingen, Texas 78550.
