Julia Morice McInnis, a Harlingen resident from 1955-2010, passed away in Houston on Sunday morning, December 4, 2016, at 98 years of age.
Born into a hardworking and well established family in Rivas, Nicaragua on July 12, 1918, Julia was the youngest of seven children. At 30 years of age, romance brought change when mutual friends introduced the young woman to American businessman William (Bill) McInnis, manager of a banana plantation for The United Fruit Company in Central America. Bill won her heart, and when they married in March 1949 Julia willingly became a wife and homemaker, devoting herself to family life. Their new start took Julia and Bill to Costa Rica, Honduras, and ultimately to Harlingen where Bill retired in the mid-1950s. Along the way they welcomed two beloved daughters, Lillian and Elizabeth, who progressed through school under their mother’s watchful guidance.
Julia was a faithful member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Harlingen for several decades where she established and nurtured many life-long friendships. She was known for keeping a spotless household and taking pride in her personal appearance, including her signature French roll hairdo. Julia started each day early, dressing and accessorizing beautifully so she’d be ready to go when friends or relatives dropped by. She was a loving and devoted wife until Bill’s death in 1971, after which her daughters and grandchildren and numerous close girlfriends became the focus of her life.
Julia was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husband Bill McInnis, and daughter Lillian McInnis Lamon (in June 2000). She is survived by daughter Elizabeth McInnis Netting (Tom); grandchildren Michael Lamon (Tracy) and Dallas Lamon Thomason (Ryan); as well as great-grandchildren Hunter Lamon, Lilly Lamon, and Teagan Thomason.
Julia is also survived by a plethora of nieces and nephews who adored their aunt and demonstrated their affection over the years with frequent contact. Considering she achieved the venerable age of 98, few peers remain; but she was blessed to enjoy the friendship and company of uncounted friends, acquaintances and family members who reached out over thousands of miles to share their love, concern, and prayers.
Although Julia loved flowers, memorial donations may be directed in lieu to Houston Hospice, a non-profit care facility located at 1905 Holcombe Boulevard, Houston, Texas 77030, (713) 467-7423.
A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Mont Meta Memorial Park, 26170 State Highway 345, San Benito, Texas 78586, (956) 399-3097, with Fr. Tom Pincelli officiating.
