HARLINGEN, TX:
On March 15, 2007, Juan Antonio Dieck, M.D., passed from this earth to meet his Creator. Juan is survived by Gloria V. Dieck his loving wife of 58 years, his son John A. Dieck, Jr., daughter-in-law Aida G. Dieck, granddaughters Melissa Aida, Alexandra Michelle, and Sofia Alexis, and two younger brothers Graciano A. Dieck and Alfonso A. Dieck. He was born on June 5, 1919, in Monterrey, Mexico.
He received his undergraduate, medical, and postgraduate medical training at the University of Nuevo Leon and affiliated hospitals in Monterrey. After two years of practice, he took an additional residency in Family Practice and General Surgery at the Nan Travis Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, Texas. Upon completion of this additional training in 1954, Dr. Dieck became one of the first graduates of the University of Nuevo Leon to gain Texas Licensure for the practice of medicine.
In 1956, he moved to Harlingen to practice his beloved profession. In over 30 years of private practice he touched the lives of many generations of patients and gained multiple awards for meritorious service from the Texas Academy of Family Physicians and the American Medical Association. Additionally, Dr. Dieck was committed to improving the quality of health care in the Rio Grande Valley and the state of Texas, and, and in 1968 he founded what had become the Annual Medical Surgical Conference of the Rio Grande Valley. He served as delegate to the Texas Medical Association as well as officer or committee member for the Cameron Willacy County Medical Society, Texas Academy of Family Physicians, Texas Cancer Society, and Texas Medical Foundation.
Always concerned for the interest of minorities and the underprivileged, Dr. Dieck served, during his career, as director of Su Clinica Familiar, president of the local National Development Association, organizer and chairman of Plaza National Bank which had become the local branch of Wells Fargo, vice president of the Brownsville Diocese Catholic Charities, and director of Brownsville Diocese Catholic Educational Broadcasting. He served his community further by chairing the Valley Rehabilitation & Treatment Center, serving on the Board of Directors of the Harlingen Chamber of Commerce, co-chairing the Harlingen Planning and Zoning Commission, and the advisory board of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.
Serving, as pallbearers, are Dr. Tom Klug, Mr. Bill Burke, Mr. Arturo Senteno, Mr. Gustavo Dieck, Mr. Zacarais Dieck, Dr. Ernesto Dieck Assad, Mr. Alfonso Dieck, and Mr. Eduardo Lozano.
Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, March 17, 2007, 10 a.m., at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the committal service at 2 p.m. at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
