San Benito, TX:
JOYCE DAVIS TUCKER, Loving wife, awesome mother, best friend and mentor, joined her Heavenly Father Tuesday morning, September 30, 2015. She loved life and her family while embracing their world with a passion for God’s work. Joyce was a constant guiding light and inspirational source of strength for many people for many years. She celebrated life with her angelic acapella voice, her famous “big hats” and cherished bluebonnets.
Born December 19, 1928 in Mercedes, Texas, her journey began in the Rio Grande Valley. She was an outstanding choir member and soloist starting in high school, professional RN nurse, wonderful wife and mother and dedicated volunteer. Surely, her psychology degree complemented all facets of her life. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and children, whether medical conventions, hunting trips, swimming meets, football games or vacations. Her beautiful voice blessed many school and community events, church choirs, weddings and the incredible South Texas Chorale.
Joyce’s inspirational RN nursing career started with schooling at UT School of Nursing in Galveston, Texas. It progressively grew as she became a Charge Nurse and Head Nurse at many hospitals-Valley Baptist of Harlingen, Dolly Vinsant Memorial of San Benito, Flow Memorial of Denton, Texas and Presbyterian Hospital of Hollywood/Los Angeles, California, crowning her nursing career as supervisor UT Medical Branch Hospitals and Galveston City Home Health and President of her alma mater UT Nursing School Alumni Association.
She retired from professional nursing to raise four children and be more active in her church and community organizations. She contributed her energy to local and state PTA. City Council, Substitute Teacher, Medical Auxiliary, Health Careers Advisor, Hospice, Border Health, Sunday School, church nursery, RGV Arts Council, South Texas Symphony Guild, McNally Student Scholarships, her high school Class of 45er’s, Community Concert, Lifetime Honorary Member of Harlingen Aquatics Team, Lifetime PTA member and named of Personalities of the South, …. it is a good thing she “retired” …. In her spare time, she enjoyed needlepoint, gardening, reading and singing.
Most important in her life were her life partner of sixty-four years, her husband and love of her life, John Robert Tucker, daughter Jantha Dianne, and sons Davis Sean, Shelton Scott and John Madsen. She was their champion and greatest cheerleader in all the family’s endeavors, big and small, she was there for all.
Joyce is survived by her loving husband, John Robert Tucker, daughter Jantha Dianne Tucker (Louis Divino), sons Davis Sean Tucker (Krysten) and John Madsen Tucker (Barbara Sue), grandchildren Maudie Melissa Cox (Bubba) and Allison Gay Manly (Chad).
The family wants to especially recognize and thank her extended caregivers for many years of extra special love and care-Dominic Guillen, Dena Guillen, Graciela Sanchez, Francis Flores, Vicki Longoria and Linda Garcia for so many wonderful times of comforting her and John, giving her a better quality of life. Many, many thanks also to her constant care from Dr. Norma Shacherl and San Benito Medical Associates.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Cameron Willacy Medical Alliance Nursing Scholarship Fund at 704 North 77 Sunshine Strip, P.M.B.#111, Harlingen, Texas 78550….or Sandi Jo Funk Hospice at 4405 Glasscock Street, Harlingen, Texas, 78550…. or to your charity of choice.
Joyce loved life and lived it to its fullest. Driven and directed by her Faith, she gave it all from her caring heart making every day a blessing and certainly blessing all our days. Truly an over achiever on a mission from God, as we will miss her, we will ever remember her radiant inner strength, resolve and wit, her comforting smile and beautiful eyes.
