Brownsville, TX- Dr. Joyce H. Ritter was born to William and Emily Ritter on February 11, 1941 and was raised in the New York –New Jersey area. She passed away on Saturday, August 27, 2011 after a long battle with leukemia.
She graduated from New York University in 1963, Katharine Gibbs School in 1964 and spent a year working in public relations in NYC. Then she returned to New York University for a Masters in Developmental and Remedial Reading in 1966.
Early in her college career, Dr. Ritter developed a unique study method for easily learning college material. This she taught as Director of the Reading and Study Skills Clinic at the University of Manitoba and at Oregon State University, as well as sharing this method with any college students who might need it in the future.
Returning to school in 1969, Dr. Ritter received her Masters of Science in Counseling in 1971 and her Doctor of Education in Special Education/Reading from Indiana University in 1974.
During her career in college and graduate teaching, Dr. Ritter was Assistant Professor at The University of Manitoba, Oregon State College, Western Kentucky University, New York University, and Chadron State College, specializing in training MS level teachers in teaching children with Learning Disabilities.
In 1982 Dr. Ritter moved to Brownsville and continued her teaching career at Hanna High School for the next 13 years.
She leaves her loving daughter, Elyse Ann Barnard; son-in-law, Jesse Barnard; and her grandchildren, Hallie Bea and Breece William.
A Celebration of Joyce’s life will be held at 11:00 A.M on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at San Benito Funeral Home.
