Jose Alonzo Mendoza Sr., 79, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2024, in Harlingen, Texas. Jose was born on September 18, 1944, in San Benito, Texas to Marcial Mendoza and Monica Alonzo Mendoza.
Right after graduating from San Benito High School, he joined the U.S. Marine Corp. from 1964 to 1968 serving in Vietnam on his last year of service. Later, he pursued further education at a vocational college specializing in Drafting and Accounting Business Management. Jose dedicated 28 years of his professional life as a loan specialist before his retirement.
An active volunteer with the Red Cross, Jose contributed to disaster relief efforts following the May 1999 Oklahoma Tornado Outbreak.
For the rest of his life, he was often sought out whether for support, advice or maneuvering through some of life’s dark halls he was always precise and reliable. Jose was always there. He loved his family, friends, and neighbors. Jose was all about, God, Country and Corp.
He joins his beloved wife Graciela Romero Mendoza.
Left to cherish Jose’s memory are his sons, Marco and Joey; stepchildren, Victor Ray and Jenny; his grandchildren, Nicholas Lee Mendoza, Joshua Alonzo Mendoza, Chloe Marie Mendoza, Samantha Lee Mendoza; brothers, Andres De La Cruz and Guillermo Mendoza; and sister, Juanita Mendoza; numerous nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, and neighbors.
The family expresses gratitude to Valley Baptist Medical Center for their care and support during this time and acknowledges the efforts of EMS for their dedicated service.
The Mendoza family will receive friends and relatives on Thursday, July 18, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 7 o’clock Thursday evening at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, July 19, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of the Universe. Following the Mass, Jose will be laid to rest at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are Dario De La Cruz, Jared Trevino, Javier Romero, Dion Green, Noah Trevino, and Victor Ray Garza. Honorary pallbearer will be Guillermo Mendoza and Joshua Alonzo Mendoza.
