Johnny C. Means, 85, passed away on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen.
Johnny was born April 24, 1925 in Ringling, OK to Roy Lee and Mrytle Means and had been a resident of Harlingen since the age of 5. He was a graduate of Harlingen High School and earned a Bachelors of Science Degree in Education and a Master of Arts Degree from Southwest Texas State University. Johnny proudly served his country with the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946, while in the service he attended Princeton University where he studied math and physics.
Mr. Means was employed with South Texas I.S.D. and retired as a Deputy Superintendent.  Prior to his employment with South Texas I.S.D., he held numerous educational positions with the Harlingen C.I.S.D. included being a teacher, coach, principal, and assistant superintendent. He was assistant principal of Memorial Junior High, principal of Bowie Elementary School and the first principal of Sam Houston Elementary School and Coakley Middle School.
He was an accomplished educator and civic minded man who received many honors and recognitions which included Gaillardian at Southwest Texas State University, Coakley Middle School Award of Recognition, Coakley’s First Principal, North Harlingen Rotarian of 2003 -2004, Charter member of North Harlingen Rotary Club, North Harlingen Rotary Club Distinguished Service Citation in 1992, and Quiet Rotarian Governor’s Citation 2000.
Johnny was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Harlingen where he was a former chair person of the Administrative Board, a long-serving church usher and was awarded the Lay Person of the Year Award in 2010.  He was a North Harlingen Rotarian.  He was a charter member of the North Harlingen Rotary Club, and a member of the USS Columbus Veterans Association, and American Legion. He was a former member of the Lions Club, Elks Club and United Way Director.  He is a past member and president of the school board of the Harlingen Public Schools. Johnny was a charter member and president of the Harlingen Area Teacher’s Credit Union.
He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, gardening, traveling with his wife and family and his friends including the Paynes and the Velas.  He was very active in church activities.
Johnny was preceded in death by his father, Roy Lee Means and his sister, Ann Means Carden.
He is survived by his mother, Mrytle Means 103 years old; his wife, Mrs. Lee H. Means; children, Laura Means (Troy) Anderson of Harlingen and Mark Means of Sugarland. Grandchildren, Amber Means of Sugarland, Ty Lee Anderson of Harlingen, Ava Leah Anderson of Harlingen. Siblings, Billie Marie Randolph, Don (Joann) Means, Dicky (Virginia) Means, Buddy Means. He is also survived by brothers-in-law, Wayne Carden and Lee Holcomb; several nephews, nieces and cousins; and his faithful, furry companion Toby.
Memorial visitation will be held Sunday, November 21, 2010 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
A celebration of Johnny’s Life will be held Monday, November 22, 2010, 4 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Harlingen with Rev. David Payne officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will Mack and Scott Randolph, Joel Means, Trey Means, Wayne Carden, John Ed Storts, John David Means and Manny Vela.
