HARLINGEN:
John Carroll Schwartz (Lt. Col. U.S.A.F., Ret.) age 90, died peacefully at home on Sunday, September 23, 2007. He was born in Perkasie, Pennsylvania on May 1, 1917 to Maude Bender Schwartz and William Henry Schwartz.
He was from Houston and graduated from the University of Houston (B.S.M.E.) in 1941. He was a graduate of the Air Corps advance Flying School, Engineering School, Tactical School, and the Air University.
During World War II, he served a combat tour flying B-24 Liberators, 15th Air Force, 449th Bomb Group. He was a flight instructor (1946) at Randolph Field, Texas. In 1948 he flew over 50 missions on the Berlin Air Lift in the C-54. Later he served in Libya, the Philippines, and in England with the Strategic Air Command in the B-36, B-47, and B-52 programs. He was Chief of Engineering Development for the Helicopter Program at Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio.
He completed his Air Force career as Air Force Plant Representative at the Boeing Wichita, Kansas plant and was honored with the Air Force Meritorious Service Award.
He retired to Harlingen, Texas in 1970. He was a member of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church and served on the St. Alban’s Day School Board. He was president of Harlingen Country Club and President of the Board of Directors of Adams Garden Irrigation District #19, and was a life member of the Confederate Air Force, the Retired Officers Association, and the Air Force Association.
He is survived by Martha Beaty Schwartz, his loving wife of almost 60 years, by sisters-in-law Florence Noethlich and husband Jack, Susan Schwartz, and Marilyn Schwartz and by nieces and nephews Cherry Daugbjerg (Ray), Clelia Hendee (Bob), Tim Windrum, Glenda Paul (Pat), Jenifer Amerson (Glenn), Evan Brunson, Donald Schwartz, Eric Schwartz, Kent Schwartz, John C. Schwartz II, David Blair (Kim), Ginger Blair, and Jeanette Shropshire.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. William H. Schwartz, sisters, Cherry S. Brunson and Lois B. Windrum and brothers, William H. Schwartz, Jr., Samuel Kent Schwartz, and Donald Charles Bender Schwartz.
John C. Schwartz served his country with honor and pride. He was a man of faith in God and a man of uncompromising integrity, generosity, and compassion.
The family would like to thank his caregivers, Letty Guillen, Sabina Rangel, Estela Hinson, Lupita Lopez, Nora Garcia Herbernar, Alicia Consigilio, Richard Adams, and Dr. John Ferris, the Valley Baptist Home Health staff, and Hospice for their nurturing, cheerful, faithful care.
The family extends a loving thank you to Dr. Robert Hatcher and Carol for their many years of care and friendship.
A memorial service will be held at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, Harlingen, Texas on Wednesday, September 26th at 10:00 a.m. with the Reverends Judy Sessions and Scott Brown officiating with burial at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio on Thursday, September 27, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. with the Rt. Reverend David Reed officiating and Full Military Honors being conducted by the United States Air Force Funeral Detail form Lackland Air Base in San Antonio, Texas.
Honorary pallbearers are Robert Hatcher, M.D., Robert Chandler, Ronnie Round, Larry Vecchi, Paul Francis and Larry Zamponi.
