John David Owens passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Golden Palms Retirement and Health Center.
John was born March 16, 1924 in Huntingdon, Tennessee to Dorothy Hilliard Owens and John Crockett Owens. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946 and on May 31, 1947 he married Catherine Starr Buchanan in Morganfield, Kentucky.
John received a Bachelor of Science Degree and Teacher Certificate from Murray State University (The Murray State Teachers College) in 1948. He was a quarterback on the Murray Thoroughbreds Football Team. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree with the highest honors from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in Memphis, Tennessee, March 1952. He was a member of the Richard Doggett Dean and Marguerite Taylor Dean Honorary Odontological Society, a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, Honorary Dental Fraternity, and a member of PSI Omega Dental Fraternity. John received his Post-Graduate Degree in Orthodontics from the University of Tennessee in October 1953.
In October of 1953 he moved to Harlingen and established his Orthodontic Practice as one of the first orthodontists to practice in the Rio Grande Valley. He was a member of the Rio Grande Valley Dental Society, Texas Dental Association, American Dental Association, Southwestern Society of Orthodontists, and the American Association of Orthodontists. In 1993 John retired from his Orthodontic Practice.
He served as president of the Rio Grande Valley Dental Society, president of the Algodon Club and as president of the Board of Trustees of the Harlingen Independent School District having served two terms. He was also a member of Harlingen Masonic Logde 1132 and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Harlingen.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine “Kay” Owens; two daughters, Ann Owens Kwiatkowski (Tommy) of Corpus Christi and Deborah Owens Wright of Harlingen; a granddaughter, Victoria Elizabeth Wright of Harlingen; and a grandson, John Owens Kwiatkowski of Corpus Christi.
A gathering will be held Thursday, March 28, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
A memorial service celebrating Dr. Owens’ life will be held on Friday, March 29, 2013 , 3:00 p.m., at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home with Rev. David Payne officiating.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Robert Scoggins, David Peters, Dr. James Burkholder, David Heffernan, Dr. James E. Paulk, Dale Dillon, Tommy Kwiatkowski, John Kwiatkowski, Gary Whittington, and Dr. Steve Shepard.
