HARLINGEN, TX:
Well-known interior decorator John H. Junkin, Jr., 60, passed away peacefully with family Tuesday at Valley Baptist Medical Center.
Johnny was born May 17, 1947 in Harlingen to John H. and Cornelia Junkin. A 1965 graduate of Harlingen High School, Johnny also graduated from Pan American University.
His career in interior design took him first to Houston and then to New York where his clients included Exxon executive George and Mary Ahern and actress Marlo Thomas. Although Johnny’s work was featured in Houston Better Homes and Gardens he also was known for his work on restaurants and nightclubs in Houston.
His kinder side was evidenced by teaching color recognition by touch at a school for the blind in Houston.
Johnny returned to the Valley in the late 1980’s to help run the family furniture store and continued to do freelance design work until his passing.
He was preceded in death by his father John H. Junkin Sr. and brothers Michael Junkin and Doug Junkin.
Johnny is survived by Cornelia Junkin (Mother), Doug (Nephew), Courtney (Niece), Sterling (Nephew), sisters-in-law Darling and Sheryl and his devoted friend Mrs. Jean Jenkins.
Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. today, with the family in attendance from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Friday at the Mont Meta Chapel.
Honorary pallbearers will include John Henderson, Kenneth Snell, Forest Garling, Stan Newding, Orlando Penuelas, Doug Junkin and Sterling Junkin.
