John J. Hext

HARLINGEN:
John J. Hext, 62, passed away on Saturday, August 25, 2007 at Valley Baptist Medical Center after a long term illness.
John was born August 8, 1945 in Weslaco, Texas to Walter A. Hext, Sr. and Paula Viola Contreras Dart.  John attended Hardin-Simmons University and was a member of the ROTC Squadron.  He was in the special Pershing Rifles Corp.  John was in the U.S. Navy and served two tours in Vietnam War as a deep sea diver and continued in the reserves until retiring in 1988.  John continued his education at Pan American University earning his degree in Chemistry.  He soon became employed by the Career Planning Placement and Testing Department.  Later he taught Chemistry in the Harlingen School District as he continued to pursue his Masters Program at New Mexico State University. Due to his failing health he retired early from teaching.  John was a member of the Elks Lodge in San Benito and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.  He enjoyed reading, old movies and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his father, Walter A. Hext, Sr.
John is survived by his mother, Paula Viola Contreras Dart; brother, Dr. George L. Hext; sister, Mrs. Estelle Hext Locklear, nephew, Brian E. Campos, and nieces, Jessica C. Locklear and Barbara L. Hext Davis.
Visitation will be held Thursday, August 30, 2007 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with family present 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 31, 2007, 2 p.m., at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.  Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito.
Pallbearers will be Dr. George Hext, Ross Locklear, Alan Myers, Brian Campos and Augustine Ponce.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Calvary Christian Library Construction Fund, 1815 N. 7th St.  Harlingen, Texas 78550.
A special acknowledgement to cousin, Maggie Trevino; close friends, Mr. & Mrs. Alan Myers and Minnie Contreras; friends, health providers, Dr. Eugene Nunnery and Rosalinda Lopez for their love and support of our brother.
