John F. Goodman
8/1/1925-1/16/2013
Harlingen, TX:
John F. Goodman went to be with his Lord on Wednesday January 16, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. Johnny Goodman, 87, was a long time resident of Harlingen and a well-known former radio and TV personality in the Rio Grande Valley. Born in Houston Texas, he proudly served in the Naval Air Corps during WW2. After the war he pursued a career in radio and then television when it became popular. After moving to Harlingen in 1957, he became a fixture at KGBT-TV, often serving as Weatherman and in other capacities where his distinctive voice was instantly recognizable. His long running noon talk show Table Talk was widely popular as was his Winter Texan series which featured many personalities from around the Valley, the State and across the border. He loved the Valley and its activities, from golf to hunting and fishing. His boyhood experiences in the Texas Hill Country led to a lifelong love of horses, the South Texas Trail Ride, and the Mercedes Livestock Show. He had many friends on both sides of the border from every station in life and received many awards for his broadcasting, advertising and civic activities.
He is survived by his sister Lynn Hollingsworth of Houston, TX; his loving wife Betty Goodman of 62 years; his son John R. Goodman and wife Susan of Raleigh, NC; his daughters Jeannie Goodman Burns of Harlingen, Linda Goodman Bull and husband Billy of LaFeria; his grandchildren Wendy Goodman Jakobovits, Ryan and Chad Bull; his great-grandchildren Katie Jakobovits and Gavin Bull; and too many other relatives and good friends to mention here.
A memorial service will be held on January 21, 2013 at 3:00 pm in the Texas Room at Golden Palms, 2101 Treasure Hills Drive in Harlingen.
In lieu of flowers the family would like donations to be made to the American Cancer Society, 5413 S. McColl Rd, Edinburg, Texas 78539.
