John Vernon Givens

South Padre Island, TX:
John Vernon Givens quietly passed away on December 4, 2009, at his home in South Padre Island, Texas after a lengthy illness. He was born September 10, 1939. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marjory and Roger Givens. Vernon attended New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico and graduated from Classen High in Oklahoma City. He attended the University of Oklahoma for three years where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.
Vernon started his career as a builder in Oklahoma City. He moved to Houston, Texas in the 70’s where he built and developed condominiums, apartments, and single family homes.  In 1995 Vernon moved to South Padre Island where he pioneered the concept of the small interior island condominium complex.  He built ten very successful “Dancer” Condominiums projects and for three years owned Dancer Condo Vacation Rentals.
Vernon is survived by his wife and best friend Charla Gray Givens of South Padre Island. They enjoyed 14 years of a close and loving relationship. He is also survived by his brother Charles Givens of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and his sister Annabel Givens of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and his nieces and nephews, Suzanne Peck, Tyler Peck, Michael Minter, Julee Lewis, Jenny Givens, Charlie Givens, Kathrine Nichols and Grace Givens and their families of seven great-nieces and nephews all of whom enjoyed visiting him in South Padre Island. Vernon had many great friends, including his childhood friend Henry Harris of South Padre Island who spent many hours in the past two years at his side.
A Celebration of Life will be held on January the 9th, 2010, in South Padre Island. Details will be announced later.  In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Sunny Glen Children’s Home, P.O.
