John O. Garner

John O. Garner, aged 83, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2024, at his residence in San Antonio.

John was born on December 16, 1940, in Abilene, Texas, to J. Arlie and Melba Larue Garner. He completed his high school education at Abilene High School in 1959 and went on to graduate from McMurry University in 1966.

Following his graduation, John embarked on a successful career in retail, selling shoes for many years with Thornton's in Abilene. He later transitioned into the insurance industry, where he worked with Royal Globe Insurance Co. After relocating to Harlingen, he continued his insurance career with Flynn Insurance Agency, May & Associates Insurance Agency, and Texas Insurance Agency.

A dedicated community member, John was actively involved in the Harlingen Rotary Club, serving as president from 1993 to 1994 and earning the distinction of Paul Harris Fellow. He was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Harlingen and, after moving to San Antonio, became a member of the First Baptist Church there.

John had a passion for life, notably enjoying golfing with friends and fishing in the Laguna Madre.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Gaye Garner, and his sons Ron Reger, James Garner, and Russell Reger. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, cousins, and a wide circle of friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his brother James A. Garner, sister-in-law Sue Garner, and his son Gaines A. Garner.

A Celebration of John's life will take place at the First Baptist Church, located at 515 McCullough Ave., San Antonio, TX, at 2:00 PM on Monday, November 11, 2024. (The service will be live-stream: http://www.fbcsa.org/specialevents)

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Texas Baptist Men’s Association, 5351 Catron Dr., Dallas, Texas 75227.
