John Ralph Funk
HARLINGEN, TEXAS-
John Ralph Funk, 61, of Harlingen, Texas passed away Friday, June 21, 2013.
John was born in Duncan, Oklahoma on May 25, 1952 to Lloyd Funk and Sarah( Young) Funk. John attended school in Duncan until 1966 when his family relocated to Raymondville, Texas. John graduated from Raymondville High School in 1970 and continued his education at Pan American College in Edinburg, Texas.
In 1972 John joined the U.S. Navy and served as an Engineman Fireman Third Class until honorably discharged in 1975. On April 26, 1974, John married Judy Ruth Erickson of Raymondville and they settled in Harlingen after John completed his military service. After moving to Harlingen, John attended TSTI to pursue Diesel Mechanics.
In 1977 John achieved his dream of becoming a farmer when he and his dad formed L&J Farms. This partnership continued until 1983 when John and Ruth formed John Funk Farms and began farming independently. Throughout his life John continually improved the way he farmed cotton and grain, using new methods and practices. When John was not farming, you could find him either at the hunting lease, on the fishing boat, or on the back porch refinishing a piece of furniture.
John is survived by his wife of 39 years, Ruth of Harlingen, his son Stephen and wife Jill of Tomball, Texas, and his daughter Jessica of Richmond, Texas. He is also survived by his mother Sarah Funk of Raymondville, his brother Harold and wife Vicki of League City, Texas, and his grandson Ryan of Tomball, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his father Lloyd Funk of Raymondville.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 24, 2013 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present to receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 25, 2013, 10 a.m., at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen with Pastor Larry Martin officiating. Interment will follow at Raymondville Memorial Cemetery in Raymondville.
Pallbearers will be Robert Warrington, Randall Mehaffey, Seth Canalichio, Kevin Canalichio, Tommy Lowe, and Ronny Lowe. Honorary Pall bearers include George Baker, Don Donaho, Billie Belschner, Curt Wilhelm, Kendall Hocott, and Emilio Hernandez, Jr.
The Funk family would like to thank the Hernandez and Cuevas families for their many years of continuous service and hard work.
