John G. Akers, 82, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2011 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. He was born February 28, 1929 in Mansville, OK to William and Ellen Akers.
John received B.S. and M.S. Degrees in Agriculture Education from Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS. He served five years in the Seabee’s with assignments in Subic Bay, Philippines and Sasebo, Japan during the Korean Conflict.
John was a teacher in Haven and Preston, KS for many years where he taught Vocational Agriculture. He also was an instructor and Department Chair of Farm Equipment Mechanics at the North Central Kansas Area Vocational School in Beloit, KS.
After moving to Harlingen, TX, John worked as the farm equipment manager for Don Stone and Sons in Raymondville, TX. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Harlingen and life long member of the Methodist Church. He also was a member of the Future Farmers of America, Phi Delta Kappa, and the Masonic Lodge.
John is survived by his wife, Sue of Harlingen; brother, Riley David Akers and his wife, Clara of San Diego, CA; five nieces, Susan Graves, Beth Detellem, Patricia Akers-Healy, Linda Lewellen and Robin Akers; brother and sister-in-law, Max and Neva Van Valkenburg of Arlington, VA; nephews, Jim Valkenburg and Ron Boyd; niece, Carol Van Valkenburg. He was preceded in death by his parents and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of John’s life will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Harlingen, 11:00 AM, Thursday, July 21, 2011 with the Rev. David Payne officiating.
