Harlingen:
Joe Goolsby Sanders, 96, passed away Friday, March 20, 2015 in Harlingen, Texas. Joe was born on November 28, 1918 in San Benito, Texas to John Franklin Sanders and Lizzie Lee Goolsby Sanders.
Joe attended school in Harlingen and graduated from Harlingen High School where he participated in the High School band, lettered for 3 years in football, National Honor Society, theater, Quill and Scroll, Annual Staff, and Literary Honor Society.
He attended Brownsville Junior College on a football scholarship where he earned an Associate of Arts Degree. Joe then graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in 1940 and was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity.
Joe prided himself in knowing that he always had a job from the time he was in the 5th grade selling magazines, newspapers and delivering HEB’s weekly specials hand bills to building roads and fences on the family ranch in North Texas after he retired.
His career included being a salesman for Schmidt Lithograph Co., Station Traffic Manager for Pan American Airways, Vice President of Rio Grande Savings and Loan, 38 years with Flynn Investment Company where he held the offices of Loan Service Officer to President, as well as President of Flynn General Insurance. As a business man, he cared for his employees and enjoyed helping people get their first home loan.
He served his community as Vice President of Tip of Texas Girl Scouts Area Council, was a member of the Board of Directors of the Texas Mortgage Bankers Association, on the Planning Committee of the Mortgage Lending Institute for the Law School of the University of Texas, Harlingen Rotary Club member, lifetime member of the Harlingen Masonic Lodge, and on the Board of Stewards of the 1st Methodist Church in Harlingen.
Joe met Alice May Shanafelt, a new teacher in Harlingen, in 1941, and married her on August 19, 1942. They had a long and happy marriage that was made complete
with the births of their three daughters who became the center of their lives.
Joe enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, coin and stamp collecting and working on the family ranch where he spent many happy times on his bulldozer. He was an avid University of Texas football fan and enjoyed attending all the home games for over 35 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice May Shanafelt Sanders; parents, John Franklin Sanders and Lizzie Lee Sanders; brothers, John Franklin Sanders Jr. and Bernie Roy Sanders; son- in- laws, Tom Newton and Michael Callaway and grandson, David Raymond Newton.
He is survived by his children: Ann Johnston and husband Vernon Clifton Johnston, (Harlingen) Kay Newton (Fort Worth) and Alice Callaway (Austin)
He is also survived by his grandchildren: Brent Johnston and wife Dallas (Buda), Carrie Johnston Allen and husband Shane (Harlingen), Natalie Newton Sims and husband Jeremy (Houston), Todd Callaway and wife Melanie (Cypress), Alison Callaway Sitzman and husband Darius (Austin), Katy Thompson Jefferies and husband Jeff (Austin) and Collis Thompson and wife Amanda (Seacrest, Florida).
His great grandchildren include: Katie and Ashley Allen; Abigail, Marina, Adrian, Ella and Ivy Sitzman; Jaden, Cade and Chloe Callaway; Reagan Newton; Alice and Hollis Jefferies; Avery Johnston and Sarah and Travis Sims.
He is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends including his loving caregivers Ruby and Paul Navarette.
Friends and family are invited to a Graveside Service at Mont Meta Memorial Park (26170 State Highway 345 San Benito, Texas, 78586, 2:00 PM, Monday, March 23, 2015 with Chaplain Joe Perez officiating.
