Jewel “Judy” Dunbar passed away Friday, December 18, 2015 in Harlingen, Texas.
Judy was born in San Benito, Texas on November 12, 1925 to Thomas Cager Knight and Daisy Hembree Knight. Judy’s father and mother moved from Shawnee, Oklahoma to San Benito, Texas in 1922. Her father was a farmer and her mother was a homemaker and seamstress.
Judy attended San Benito High School and afterward moved to Harlingen. She began her employment career as a cashier at a Harlingen movie theater. She met her husband Richard “Dick” Dunbar when he was stationed at the Harlingen Air Base Gunnery School with the U.S. Army Air Corps. They married on June 17, 1944 and always resided in Harlingen.
Judy began working for Central Power and Light Company in Harlingen in 1946 as a cashier/clerk and worked for CP&L for 40 years retiring in December 1986.
Judy and Richard were members of the First Presbyterian Church in Harlingen. Through the years she enjoyed association with the B.P.O. Of Does, Drove 90 in Harlingen, the Arroyo Boat and Ski Club, the Night Owls Dance Club, and the Coterie Club in Harlingen.
She is survived by her daughter, Dixie Dunbar; a brother, Jack D. Knight of New Braunfels, Texas; and niece and nephews.
Those who predeceased her are her husband, Richard "Dick", her parents; her brothers, Vetrice Knight, Thomas C. Knight, Jr., and Brown Lee Knight; her sisters, Ora Van Haltren, Gladys Knight, Gail Rhine, and Audrey Chaffin.
Gratitude is expressed to the staff at Victoria House for Judy’s exceptional care and consideration for the last two years. Prior to residing at Victoria House Judy (and Richard) lived at Canterbury Gardens for eight years with many courtesies and care by the staff there.
Also, much gratitude is expressed to the following who contributed compassionate care in various capacities: Valley Baptist Medical Center Palliative Care Gentiva Hospice Team, along with numerous nursing staff members; to A&M Nursing staff; Dr. Robert Minor and staff; Dr. Victoria Parada, and Dr. Todd Skenkenberg.
